New for 2014: WAVE START & strollers allowed! RACE DAY is May 4, 2104! Register online at

The Takoma Park Safe Routes to School 5K Challenge 2014 promises to be bigger and better than ever, for first time 5K runners and 5 year veterans.  The TKPK5K Race Committee is committed to the highest standards for safety and fun, so this year the race will feature a WAVE START and include runners with strollers. The WAVE START allows the top seeded runners to start first, the over 10 minute milers and runners with strollers have their own exciting start (runners with strollers must stay toward the back) and a third wave of walkers to start independently. Only one wave will be in the starting corral at a time.

Safe Grow Act

The Safe Grow Act restricts the use of pesticides for cosmetic lawn care in the City of Takoma Park. Starting March 1, 2014, Takoma Park will prohibit commercial applicators from applying restricted pesticides for lawn care purposes on private property or public rights-of-way in the City. Starting January 1, 2015, the law will apply to all individuals and will prohibit the use of restricted pesticides for lawn care purposes. Passage of the Safe Grow Act marks the first time that a United States municipality the size of Takoma Park has used its authority to broadly restrict pesticide use on private and public property.

The Safe Grow Act's list of restricted pesticides includes pesticide and pesticide products that are known causes of cancer or endocrine disruptors. Additionally, restricted items have been identified by environmental agencies in the United States, European Union, and Canada as having other toxicity characteristics. Exceptions exist for the control of certain noxious weeds, invasive species, and for public health pests. More information on the law can be found at: 

SHA Projects in Takoma Park

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is currently operating two major road construction projects in Takoma Park. The projects are a rehabilitation of the Carroll Avenue Bridge over Sligo Creek Parkway and maintenance of the New Hampshire Avenue (MD 650) bridge over Sligo Creek.
