FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chief Alan M. Goldberg from the Takoma Park Police Department announces the arrest of Andrea William Smith, 30, of Silver Spring, Maryland, for 1st degree assault, 2nd degree assault, reckless endangerment, open weapon with intent to injure and disorderly conduct.
On August 11, 2013, at approximately 6:17 pm, Takoma Park Police responded to the 7600 block of New Hampshire Avenue for a disturbance reported on a Montgomery County Ride-On Bus. Upon arrival, Prince George’s County Police had already taken Smith into custody. While sitting at the back of the bus, Smith became irate and began yelling that he was going to kill people of various ethnicities. He further became disorderly and demanded that the bus driver stop the bus. When the driver did not stop the bus, Smith made his way to the front of the bus and again demanded that the driver stop the bus. The driver asked Smith to stay behind the yellow line, at which time Smith began to physically assault the driver while grabbing at the steering wheel. The driver managed to stop the bus safely and stood up to defend himself against Smith. While continuing his assault on the driver, Smith pulled a pocket knife out of his pocket and began waving it in the air and at the driver. At that time, Smith stabbed the driver in his leg. The driver managed to get himself off the bus. Smith also fled the bus and attempted to climb the barrier on the median strip on New Hampshire Avenue. At that time, he was apprehended by Prince George’s County Police. The driver was transported to a local hospital and treated with non-life threatening injuries. Smith was also taken to a local hospital for a self inflicted wound to his finger and he was treated and released by the hospital. There were no other injuries to passengers on the bus.
Smith was transported by Takoma Park Police to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit without incident and charged accordingly.
