Notice of Public Hearing on Proposed Charter Amendment (Voting and Elections)

Pursuant to Section 502(c) of the Takoma Park Charter, the Council of the City of Takoma Park will hold a public hearing on a proposed amendment to the Charter titled “Voting and Elections.” The proposed Charter amendment: (1) adjusts qualifications for voting; (2) sets a minimum age for serving as Mayor or Councilmember; (3) lowers the voting age to 16; (4) reduces the residency requirement to 21 days before being qualified to vote in City elections; (5) provides for early voting and revises the requirements for provisional voting; and (6) allows for same day voter registration (including change of address).

Proposed Safe Grow Zone Ordinance

Residents have drafted an ordinance that would amend the City Code to clarify what is meant by the cosmetic use of a pesticide, immediately prohibit the use of cosmetic pesticides on City property, and phase in a public education campaign and restrictions on the use of cosmetic lawn pesticides on private property within the City.

Public Forum on Proposed Safe Grow Zone

A number of City residents are promoting establishing Takoma Park as a Safe Grow Zone where the use of cosmetic lawn and garden pesticides is limited or prohibited. The City Council will hold a public forum on the matter on Monday, March 18, from 7:30 to 8:30 pm in the Community Center Auditorium. The forum will feature a panel including the Public Works Director, who would be responsible for implementing the plan on City property, and plan proponents. Residents who wish to learn more or comment on the proposal are encouraged to attend the forum. Background information for the Proposed Safe Grow Zone Ordinance is available here:
