Women’s History Month Proclamation (PDF)
WHEREAS, women of every race, class, and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our communities in countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and
WHEREAS, in shattering glass ceilings, overcoming discrimination, harassment and hardship, women have been bold and fearless, widening the circle of opportunities for women and girls and creating stronger, healthier communities; and
WHEREAS, women have played and continue to play critical economic, cultural, and social roles in every sphere of the life in our communities; and WHEREAS, women have served as leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social change movement, not only in securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and other movements, which create a more fair and just society for all; and
WHEREAS, women have served our country courageously in the military and were particularly important in the establishment of early charitable, philanthropic, and cultural institutions; and
WHEREAS, far too often women’s heroic efforts and their stories have gone untold – especially those of the millions of Black women, immigrant women, Indigenous women and others from diverse communities; and
WHEREAS, this year’s theme, “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion” recognizes women, past and present, who understand that for a positive future, we need to eliminate bias and discrimination in all its forms from society and commit to embracing everyone and excluding no one in the common pursuit for opportunity, equality, and justice.
