THE TAKOMA PARK ARTS AND HUMANITIES COMMISSION
“celebrating the creative spirit of our community”

POETRY OPPORTUNITIES

Poet Laureate Program

The Takoma Park Poet Laureate program honors the achievements of a local poet and is designed to provide literary leadership in the community. Our goal is to not only support and promote Takoma Park’s poets but to stimulate interest in poetry among residents of the city, to encourage young and old to strive for greater expressive abilities, and to encourage wider appreciation of poetry and literature.

  • Poet Laureate Program Description
  • Poet Laureate Anne Becker (2007-2009)
  • Poet Laureate Don Berger (2005-2007)

Bathroom Poetry Project

If you enjoy the unconventional, the “Bathroom Poetry Project” is for you. Funded by the Commission in 2008, the project is an exploration of poetry in non-traditional spaces. Discover the work of community poets in local business and community spaces around Takoma Park.

Information on locations and featured poets can be found at http://bathroompoet.net/Project.htm
Poetry Reading Series

The Commission’s “third thursday” poetry series is an excellent opportunity to hear the work of some of the finest poets in the region. The readings, held at the Takoma Park Community Center - Sam Abbott Citizens Center, begin at 7:30 PM and generally last for an hour. An informal reception follows. The readings are free and open to the public.
