Speed Cameras

In March 2009 the City of Takoma Park implemented the Safe Speed Program. The program was approved by City Council and approved locations were permitted through State Highway Administration.

Citations are issued if the vehicle’s speed is 12 miles per hour or more than the posted speed limit.  The fine for a speed camera citation is $40.00; no points will be issued on your license nor will fines impact your insurance premiums. Failure to pay the citation may result in flags on the vehicle’s registration and/or the registered owner being sent to collections which will reflect on their credit report.

Speed cameras have reduced speeding and have led to a remarkable reduction in the number of vehicular accidents in the City of Takoma Park. On New Hampshire Avenue collisions dropped from 413 in the two years priors to program implementation to 11 in the year after implementation.

Safe Speed Corridors

Safe Speed Corridors are stretches of roadway identified and approved for Speed Camera Enforcement. Portable cameras can be placed in authorized locations that have met all requirements.  The goal of this approach is to encourage drivers to “Respect the Speed Limit” along the entire stretch of a roadway, rather than at one fixed speed camera location.

New locations are given a 15 day warning period.
