COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT - Housing and Community Development
Takoma Park has a number of initiatives to help create vibrant, healthy communities. Many of these initiatives are funded through the Community Development Block Grant Program. What is a Community Development Block Grant? Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) are federal from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) that are distributed to communities for projects which ensure decent housing, a safe environment, and economic opportunity. To learn more about the program, refer to HUD's Community Development Library. Who benefits from CDBG projects? CDBG projects primarily assist people who earn low and moderate incomes and/or low and moderate income neighborhoods of the City. Who can apply for CDBG funds? Any non-profit organization, agency, or CHDO (Community Housing Development Organization) that is serving the Takoma Park, MD population may apply. Individuals may not apply. What types of projects can be funded with CDBG? CDBG funds are used for the following types of projects:
How does an organization apply for CDBG funds? The applications are generally available in July with a deadline of mid to late August. They can be obtained from the City of Takoma Park Housing and Community Development Department, Monday - Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm and on-line. When are CDBG funds available? Funds are typically available within 12 - 18 months of the year applied. For example, 2009 funds will be available in late January 2010. Where can I get an application?
