Preservation of the environment and natural resources is an important component to City and County requirements for development. In particular, the City requires permits related to tree protection and stormwater management. The County's Department of Park and Planning offers guidelines for environmentally sound development and additional resources through their Environmental Planning Division

• Chesapeake Climate Action Network works to reduce global warming. It created a community silo in Takoma Park to store corn for a local group of residents who use it as an eco-friendly heat source.
