New for 2014: WAVE START & strollers allowed! RACE DAY is May 4, 2014! Register online at

The Takoma Park Safe Routes to School 5K Challenge 2014 promises to be bigger and better than ever, for first time 5K runners and 5 year veterans.  The TKPK5K Race Committee is committed to the highest standards for safety and fun, so this year the race will feature a WAVE START and include runners with strollers. The WAVE START allows the top seeded runners to start first, the over 10 minute milers and runners with strollers have their own exciting start (runners with strollers must stay toward the back) and a third wave of walkers to start independently. Only one wave will be in the starting corral at a time.

 Here is how it works:

  • 8:00 AM START Wave 1: 10 minute mile and faster
  • 8:03 AM START Wave 2: Over 10 minute mile and runners with strollers, in the back!
  • 8:06 AM START Wave 3: Walkers

The Takoma Park Safe Routes To School 5K promotes pedestrian safety and challenges the students, parents and staff at Piney Branch Elementary School, Rolling Terrace Elementary School, Takoma Park Elementary School, East Silver Spring Elementary School and Takoma Park Middle School and City residents, to train and compete in a 5K run or walk, 1 Mile Fun Run or ¼ Mile Youth Run. Proceeds fund pedestrian safety and health programs through the school PTAs.
