Plastic Bags & Plastic Film Are No Longer Recyclable

Friday, June 26, 2015

As of July 1, 2015 plastic bags and plastic film is no longer accepted in the City's collection curbside recycling program.

The City of Takoma Park uses the Prince George's County Processing Facility for processing of curbside collected recyclables. Prince George's County has ceased accepting plastic bags or plastic film as of July 1 at the processing facility.

There are two primary reasons why plastic bags are no longer accepted:

  1. The plastic bags and film are damaging equipment that is used to sort and bale the recyclables. The plastic film jams and clogs the machinery causing damage and breakdowns.
  2. The plastic bags collected through the curbside recycling program become dirty and contaminated with bits of broken glass and other materials. This reduces their quality and value to manufacturers who use and purchase plastic bags and film.

Plastic bags can still be recycled at many grocery stores in the area. Stores accept clean, dry plastic bags and can market these to manufacturers because they are uncontaminated with other materials. The best option is to use reusable bags or totes when shopping or opt for a paper bag where available, instead of a plastic bag.
