International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 9; Two Schools Added– Community Advisory

International Walk to School Day is an annual event that promotes the benefits of walking to school. Children, parents, teachers, and community leaders in Takoma Park and around the world will join forces on October 9 to enhance child pedestrian safety, physical activity and strengthen community involvement. Celebrations in Takoma Park will involve five area schools: Takoma Park Elementary School, Piney Branch Elementary School, Takoma Park Middle School, Rolling Terrace Elementary School and East Silver Spring Elementary School. Walk to School Day is a Takoma Park Safe Routes to School Program.

Takoma Park Middle School: Students will be met by parent volunteers at two stations on school grounds. Snacks and safety materials will be distributed. Students can sign up for a raffle. Expect increased numbers of walkers and bicyclists (scooters and skateboards, too).

7:15 am - Students start arriving

7:55 am - School starts

Takoma Park Elementary School: Students, parents and staff will meet at the Community Center on Maple Avenue. They will walk together along Philadelphia Avenue to Holly Avenue.

8:30 am - Walkers meet at the Community Center, including Mayor Williams and Chief Goldberg

8:35 am - Brief remarks by Chief Goldberg, start walking

8:45 am - School starts

Piney Branch Elementary School: All Piney Branch students, including bus riders, will be dropped off at 7620 Maple Avenue. The students will assemble in the parking lot with their class. MCPS transportation has agreed to drop the students at the meeting spot. PBES patrols will be posted at all driveways and intersections.

8:45 am- Walkers arrive

9:05 am - Begin walking up Maple Avenue

9:15 am - Arrive at school, assemble in class groups; brief remarks, pledge of allegiance and safety patrol pledge

9:20 am - Students proceed to class

Rolling Terrace Elementary School: Students, parents and school staff will meet at Long Branch-Garland Park Garland Avenue. Snack and drinks will be provided at the park. Everyone should wear red. Walkers can join the raffle to win a bike helmet. The class with the highest attendance will also get a prize!

8:00 am - Meet at Long Branch-Garland Neighborhood Park

8:20 am - Walk to school as a group escorted by the Maryland National Capitol Mounted Police!

8:40 am - School starts

East Silver Spring Elementary School: Students, parents and school staff will meet at the Silver Spring Police Sub Station, 801 Sligo Avenue, Silver Spring. MCPS buses will drop students at the meeting site. Montgomery County Police will escort the walkers to school.

9:00 am - Begin walking to school together!

9:15 am- Have a short assembly under the flagpole about safety
