FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chief Alan M. Goldberg from the Takoma Park Police Department announces the arrest of Keith Abdur Raheem Wright, 50, of Silver Spring, Maryland, for Auto Theft, Theft Over $1,000 and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.
On January 28, 2014, at approximately 2:08 am, Takoma Park Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2005 green Honda Civic. The officer followed the vehicle down Roanoke Avenue, then east on Flower Avenue and then turned left on to Carroll Avenue. The officer activated his emergency equipment and attempted to stop the vehicle in the 8000 block of Carroll Avenue and Merrimac Drive, however, the vehicle failed to stop and instead turned right on to Merrimac Drive, right on to University Blvd. and continued to flee eastbound. The registration on the plates did not come back as stolen, so the pursuit was discontinued. However, units followed up by going to the address of the person who the car was registered to. When arriving at the address on Houston Court, another vehicle was parked sitting idle with the parking lights illuminated with one front seat passenger and two rear passengers. A vehicle check revealed that that vehicle was reported stolen out of Prince George's County, Maryland. Units approached the vehicle and detained the passengers. Another subject nearby, identified as the driver, Wright, was taken into custody.
Wright was arrested, charged accordingly and transported to the Montgomery Country Central Processing Unit.
The passengers of the vehicle were released from the scene without charges.
Officers followed up with the owner of the first vehicle that an attempt stop was made on and found out that the victim's vehicle had also been stolen, but not yet reported because the victim was not aware at the time. The outstanding stolen vehicle is described as a 2005 green Honda Civic, MD Tag #5AN4233.
The outstanding vehicle has been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) stolen vehicle database. Investigation continues under case #14004259. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to please call us at 301-270-1100.
