Food insecurity is on the rise due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Medium Rare restaurant owner Mark Bucher has launched a new program to decrease food insecurity. Bucher is an entrepreneur, restaurant owner, advocate, and now founder of the Feed the Fridge Program!
How does it work?
Each refrigerator is filled with between 25 and 100 meals a day, Monday through Friday. The meals are sourced from high-quality restaurants throughout the DC area that provide a variety of cuisines. Made fresh each day with each meal including — 30% carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 30% vegetable. All meals are ready to eat. You have the option of heating up the meals or eating them as is. For more information about the program click here.
Need a meal? Just walk right up and help yourself! No questions! No Sign-ups! Grab as much as you need!
What time of day are meals replaced?
Meals are delivered from 9 am to 11 am. Meals are replaced every weekday. Meals are NOT added on the weekends. Holidays are based on if the host location is open on holidays.
Are their meatless options provided daily? And are they marked somehow?
Ideally would love to in the future, that relies heavily on donations.
I have dietary restrictions, is there a list of ingredients on the meals?
We ask that our partner restaurants provide labels with ingredients on their meals. We do not turn away meals even if they are not labeled, but we do request that all our partners provide a list of ingredients.
I have a family of 5, there’s really no limit on the meals I can take?
There are no limits to the meals you can take and no questions asked. Take as many as you need.
Are they ready to eat or do I have to cook/assemble them?
All meals are ready to eat straight out of the fridge. You have the option of heating up the meals or eating them as is.
How frequently are the meals replaced?
Meals are replaced every weekday.
What time of day are they replaced?
Meals are delivered from 9 am to 11 am.
Are there new meals added on weekends and holidays too?
Meals are not added on the weekends. The Frig is not restocked on holidays
How do you determine how many meals are placed in the refrigerator per location?
The number of meals is based on the donations we receive on a week-to-week basis.

It seems as if things are finally getting better with COVID, does that mean this program will stop?
The reality is, even before COVID, people were hungry. We will continue our efforts to feed the D.C. Metro area until every citizen is food secure.
If I am a local restaurant, how can I get involved in providing the meals occasionally?
If you are a restaurant or chef interested in getting involved, please send a message through our portal on feedthefridge.org. Please include your name, your restaurant’s name, and the best phone # to contact you. Within the message please let us know if you are interested in donating meals occasionally or if you would like to join our initiative as a full partner. We will have one of our team members reach out.
About Feed the Fridge
- Feed the Fridge is teaming up with the city of Takoma Park and Montgomery County Council, to expand Feed the Fridge’s efforts, placing refrigerators stocked with free and fresh meals across Maryland to help students and others facing food insecurity.
- Feed the Fridge has installed 19 refrigerators at recreation centers around Washington D.C. and Maryland. Ultimately, each fridge is stocked with over 100 meals per day. Students, and others in need, are invited to walk up and receive meals. No registration nor questions asked.
- As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Bucher’s “We Care” charity raises money through donations to pay restaurants to provide daily meals, offering a lifeline to the beleaguered local restaurant industry while confronting the food emergency. It’s a win-win for struggling restaurants and hungry children across the nation’s capital.
