About Bruce Williams
Bruce and his husband, Geoffrey Burkhart, have lived in Takoma Park since 1981. They thought they would buy and fix up a house and move on, but stayed because they found “home”. Bruce has a BA from Lehigh University and has worked for the federal government and for a Baltimore law firm. He has run his own general contracting business, remodeling and renovating houses in the metropolitan area, since 1974. He is a founding board member and treasurer of the Silver Spring Takoma Thunderbolts. He has served on the City Council since 1993, and has served as Mayor since 2007.
Bruce is active with many organizations. He is the longest serving member of the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, was Chair in 2002, and was honored to receive the Elizabeth and David Scull Metropolitan Public Service Award as the outstanding public servant in the region in 2004. He is the founding Chair of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Regional Excellence which runs a Certified Public Manager program with George Washington University. He is a member and past Chair of the National Capital Region Emergency Preparedness Council. He was appointed by Governor O’Malley to the EPA’s Local Government Advisory Committee on the Chesapeake Bay. He is also active with the Maryland Municipal League as a member of the Board of Directors, and as Past President of the Montgomery Chapter. He spends quite a bit of time in Annapolis during the legislative session as Chair of MML’s Legislative Committee. He is also a past President of the Maryland Mayors Association.
