  • Lecture: Tokyo Jazz: Decentering "America's Classical Music" 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM | 7500 Maple Ave, Takoma Park, MD 20912, USA

    Though Jazz is often viewed as distinctly American, this lecture looks outside our national borders to a thriving scene in Tokyo, Japan. With the help of a series of musical demonstrations, recordings, and videos, this lecture will introduce the contemporary jazz scene in Tokyo, touching on issues of access, transnational exchange, and the generation of authenticity surrounding this musical scene. Presented by William Scally, a PhD student in ethnomusicology.

    Featuring artwork by Susana Garten, Lauren Kingsland, and Marsha Stein. This exhibit explores various cultural traditions via quilting, enamel and acrylic paint. Exhibit runs through November 6.
