About Ward 5 Councilmember Cara Honzak

Cara lives in Takoma Park with her husband, Miro, and their three children, Dominik, Seneca, and Dakota. They have lived in their home in Takoma Park for the last 20 years, and their children attend public schools.

Cara is a senior international development professional whose expertise is in building strategic alliances across the environment and health sectors to bring essential services – such as healthcare, livelihoods, access to natural resources, and climate resilience – to some of the most remote, marginalized communities in the world.

Throughout her career, she has managed large budgets and projects, liaised with institutional, private, and public partners and donors, led monitoring and evaluation efforts, and analyzed, presented on, and communicated about policies and programs to multiple levels of government, communities, and other stakeholders, and mentored those with interests in intersectional development. She has also worked domestically on health and wellness in our local schools, immigrant advocacy, support for homeless adults, arts for youth, and job training partnerships.

Cara has a B.A. in Latin American Studies from Columbia University and a Master of Public Affairs from the LBJ School of the University of Texas. Cara is an outdoor enthusiast, swims regularly, plays violin and guitar, and is multi-lingual. She is passionate about building bridges across cultures and different walks of life to increase shared experiences and build a stronger community.
