Message From Mayor Searcy: Takoma Park Stands With Its Immigrant Community
On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed an Executive Order about border security and immigration enforcement. In this time of uncertainty at the federal level, I understand that many members of our community are afraid. I want you to know that the City of Takoma Park is committed to helping everyone, keeping people safe, and supporting all members of our community, no matter where they were born or what their background is.
Takoma Park has been a Sanctuary City for over 30 years. The City of Takoma Park Municipal Code states that, while performing their duties:
- City police cannot help with enforcing federal immigration laws that could lead to deportation.
- City police and workers cannot ask about residents’ citizenship or immigration status unless required by federal or state law, such as when someone is applying for a city job or a U.S. passport.
- City workers cannot share information about a person’s citizenship or immigration status with anyone unless required by law.
- City workers cannot discriminate against anyone based on their citizenship or immigration status.
We know that many places in the country have seen increases in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity. The City of Takoma Park legally cannot interfere with ICE activity. However, it is important to note that Takoma Park has not been a target for ICE raids.
I understand that ICE’s actions can make people nervous. It is important to remind everyone not to be afraid to talk to the City staff, including the Takoma Park Police. Our staff are here to help and serve all residents. There are also online resources about your rights during immigration raids. One helpful resource is “Know Your Rights: Immigrant Rights.”
We are looking at the Executive Order to understand how it might affect Takoma Park. This includes identifying partners and additional resources that support residents in need. Please check our website for updates and additional information.
Our community values inclusion, safety, and support. We will continue to uphold these values and stand by every member of our community. Takoma Park will stay united, inclusive, and safe, by standing together as one.
