About Ward 4 Councilmember Kurt Gilbert

Born in Washington, DC, Kurt Gilbert moved to Takoma Park at the age of 5 in 1974. Under the guidance of the Takoma Park Recreation Department, Kurt learned the value of community service and continued to serve as a youth counselor/coach throughout his adolescence. After graduating from Montgomery Blair High School in 1987, Kurt attended Montgomery College for two years of studies and athletics (football).

In 1993, Kurt began a career in law enforcement with the Takoma Park Police Department.  While serving in a law enforcement capacity, Kurt continued his studies at the University of Maryland University College, earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice.  Kurt continued his youth outreach with the Takoma Park Boys & Girls Club and eventually merged his law enforcement, youth outreach, and community engagement responsibilities with the Montgomery County Police Department’s Montgomery Blair H.S. School Resource Officer.  While in that capacity, Kurt helped coach the Blair High School Football Team. This partnership helped strengthen the communication lines between the two agencies and local youth.

Kurt served 27 years with the agency, retiring in 2020 at the rank of Lieutenant and a member of the Government Alliance for Racial Equity (G.A.R.E). He then served a short term as the Commander of Support Services and Criminal Investigations with the Bladensburg Police Department.

Kurt is currently a board member of the Deauville Tenant Association. In this role, he worked alongside Housing and Community Development to assist his apartment neighbors with the ownership acquisition process.
