Immigration Information and Resources
0In 1985, Takoma Park’s Sanctuary City Ordinance was passed at a time when local churches had begun offering sanctuary to some of the thousands of refugees fleeing civil wars in El Salvador and Guatemala. Forty years later, the City of Takoma Park remains committed to helping everyone, keeping people safe, and supporting all members of our community, no matter where they were born or what their background is.
The City of Takoma Park Municipal Code states that, while performing their duties:
- City police cannot help with enforcing federal immigration laws that could lead to deportation.
- City police and workers cannot ask about residents’ citizenship or immigration status unless required by federal or state law, such as when someone is applying for a city job or a U.S. passport.
- City workers cannot share information about a person’s citizenship or immigration status with anyone unless required by law.
- City workers cannot discriminate against anyone based on their citizenship or immigration status.
