About Rental Requests with the Recreation Department

Spaces within one of the Takoma Park Recreation Department’s facilities or one of our park shelters may be available for your next family celebration or association meeting. Rental and service fees vary depending on the type of group renting (city residents, non-residents or commercial/business) and the equipment and staff required. Rental requests are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that Recreation Department events and programming takes precedence in scheduling.

Review  Administrative Regulation No. 2011-1 for regulations governing public use, facilities rentals and general responsibilities of the user. The regulations does not reflect the current price (please verify in the latest City Guide or on ActiveNet).

Rental Availability

You can check room/shelter availability or create a request with ActiveNet or by visiting the Recreation Department office during regular business hours. Rentals can not be reserved back-to-back, there is a 30 minute Recreation Department window between each rental for staff purposes.

Permits are issued a maximum of 3 months in advance of the event date. However, rentals requested within a 10 day window must be done in person at the Recreation Dept Office.

Please note hanging decorations on the walls (by any method) and removing Recreation Department decorations/signage is prohibited.

Tables and chairs are provided. Please allow time in your rental for set-up and break-down.

The auditorium will be unavailable for rental during Library and Community Center renovations due to limited parking.

Examples of acceptable indoor rentals include: community and business meetings, 12 and under birthday parties, baby showers, sports practices (gym only), religious services, performances (auditorium only). Teen and adult parties are not allowed in any of the City’s indoor facilities (with the exception of baby showers).

Residential Rate Requirements

Resident rates apply to those persons who reside in, pay taxes to and are eligible to vote in the City of Takoma Park elections (if 16 years of age or older).

Non-resident rates apply to those who live outside of Takoma Park or those who have a Takoma Park mailing address but do not pay taxes to the City.

Commercial/Business rate will be applied to any rental held for business purposes (including non-profits), regardless of where the patron or business is located.

When registering for a class or conducting business as a Takoma Park resident, proof is required in the form of a state issued photo ID or current lease with a valid Takoma Park address.

Refund Policy

  • Registrants assume the risk of changes in personal affairs or health.
  • Refunds will be approved with written/electronic notification received seven business days prior to scheduled start of program/reservation.  A $15.00 administrative fee will be deducted from the total refund and may take up to 30 days to receive.
  • Registrants may choose to receive a credit for the remaining amount which may be used for another program. Credits cannot be transferred.
  • Refunds after the program/reservation has begun will be considered only with medical verification – no exceptions. No refund after the program has ended.



Limited indoor rentals are available.  Book online or in person.


Rental Expectations

  • Set up and clean up times should be included in your rental timeframe.
  • Rooms are not cleaned in between rentals, renters must leave the space as they found it.
  • Decorations should not be pinned or taped to the walls as this will damage the paint.
  • Please take all trash to the exterior dumpsters when renting Heffner Park Community Center.
  • Tables and chairs must remain inside the facility.
  • Alcohol is not permitted on premise.
