Public Hearing: Priority Needs and Proposed Projects for the Community Development Block Grant Program

The Council will be holding a public hearing on October 3 to solicit comments regarding Takoma Park’s Community Development Block Grant program.

The Community Development Block Grant program (CDBG) was initiated in 1974 and is one of the oldest programs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). CDBG grants are provided on an annual basis to communities to ensure decent affordable housing for all, to provide services to the most vulnerable, to create jobs, and expand business opportunities. On June 15, 2016, the Council adopted Resolution 2016-16, limiting the expenditure of CDBG) allocations to capital. Takoma Park’s CDBG funds are provided as a pass through from Montgomery County.

Qualifying capital projects must be located in designated CDBG eligible census tracts, illustrated in the accompanying map, or persons or households of low and moderate incomes as defined by HUD. In Montgomery County, a household of four with an annual income of $77,450 or less is considered low or moderate income for purposes of the CDBG program.

Community members are encouraged to comment during the hearing on the needs of the City’s low and moderate-income households and to suggest appropriate capital projects to address those needs.

Municipal Government Works Month

Since 1993, Maryland’s cities and towns have celebrated Municipal Government Works Month each November to promote residents’ awareness of and interest in local government. To help promote municipal government awareness, the Mayor issued a Proclamation on November 9, 2015 proclaiming November as Municipal Government Works Month.

The City of Takoma Park helps to make Maryland a great place to live, work, and play. Here is a snapshot of the work that municipal government does to enhance the quality of life.

Vacuum Leaf Collection.  The Public Works Department picks up leaves each fall. This years collection begins November 16 and continues through December 18. Not only does this service help clean up our yards, sidewalks, and streets, it helps our gardens grow by making shredded leaf mulch available in the spring.

Kilowatt Smackdown. With the support of the City of Takoma Park, the Green Impact Campaign (GIC) and Nextility, two DC-based energy organizations, are coordinating a community initiative to help Takoma Park small businesses save money on energy while reducing their environmental impact.

Snow Angels Program. The program developed from a partnership between student volunteers of the Takoma Park Middle School Difference Makers and the City of Takoma Park’s Lifelong Takoma Program. The Snow Angels provide assistance to those who most need help with snow removal in the winter. Recruitment for volunteers and those who need assistance with snow removal is going on now.

Police Services and Programs. Whether online, in person or by phone, the Police Department is here to serve the people of Takoma Park.  The department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency service via the front parking lot of the Takoma Park Community Center Center.

Food Waste Collection. Currently, the City is collecting from approximately 1,500 households with an average of 13 pounds per household per week. This curbside collection program is available to all single family homes and multi-family properties with twelve (12) units or less. Interested households can register through the City’s Food Waste Page or by calling 301-891-7633.
