Community Quality of Life Grants Now Accepting Applications through March 9

 

The City of Takoma Park is currently accepting applications for its Community Quality of Life Grants Program through Thursday, March 9, 2023. Click here to Apply  

 

The Community Quality of Life Grants Program provides financial support for specific programs, projects, and events that improve the quality of life for city residents by providing greater access and opportunities for participation in the arts and sciences. Projects are eligible for up to $10,000 in financial support.

Funding for FY23 is available for projects taking place between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024.

Four-Way Stop Sign at MD 410 (Ethan Allen Ave) and Elm Ave

 

The State Highway Administration (SHA) approved, and resident-requested four-way stop at Ethan Allen and Elm is being installed and will be operational sometime on Saturday, January 14.

This is a temporary installation, as SHA is concerned that traffic may routinely back up into the New Hampshire Ave intersection and reserves their right to discontinue the 4-way stop.

We ask that motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians please use caution in the area as everyone adjusts to the new traffic control.

Adventist HealthCare Opens Primary Care Office in Takoma Park

 

As part of the Washington Adventist Hospital relocation requirements, the City supported Adventist’s request to close the urgent care center and Adventist HealthCare agreed to open a primary care office that includes behavioral health counseling.

Community Police Academy Now Accepting Applications

 

The Community Police Academy will begin on Tuesday, March 7, 2023. Applications are due Friday, February 17, 2023.

About the Academy

The Community Police Academy is a 12-week program consisting of one class a week on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. The classes cover patrol, traffic enforcement, use of force, criminal investigations, firearms, community policing, etc. The presentations are slide show/lecture style and will be given by officers, detectives, and civilians of the Takoma Park Police Department. There will also be multiple opportunities for hands-on learning through equipment demonstrations, practical scenarios, field trips, and ride-alongs with patrol officers.

The Takoma Park Police Department believes that educating the community will result in gaining their understanding and support. Through the implementation of the Community Police Academy, the community will gain new insight into how law enforcement officers perform their duties. The success of any law enforcement agency depends largely upon the amount of cooperation and support it receives from the community it serves. The Community Police Academy is:

  • Free to the public
  • Limited to the first 25 students
  • Filled on a first-come/first-served basis.

The Takoma Park Police Department encourages all applicants to be able to commit to the full 12 weeks to get the most out of the program. If you are interested in learning about the Takoma Park Police Department and local government, are 16 years of age or older, and live or work in Takoma Park, you may apply. The applicants may not have any serious misdemeanor or felony offenses.

 

The deadline to submit a completed application is Friday, February 17, 2023.

We Are Expecting Some Wintry Weather in the DMV Over The Next Few Days – Know Who to Contact

We are expecting some wintry weather in the DMV over the next few days. Please know who to contact in an emergency and check on your neighbors.

For any storm-related emergencies, including any injury, tree into a structure, or downed power lines that could still be electrified, call 911.

To report downed branches and other debris in the public right of way – roadways or sidewalks – contact Takoma Park Public Works at:  publicworks@takomaparkmd.gov or 301-891-7633.

Montgomery County Officials Recommend Masks to Slow Covid Transmission – CDC is offering Free Home Test Kits

Montgomery County:  County officials recommend precautionary measures such as wearing masks to slow transmission, protect the most vulnerable populations, and keep hospitalizations down as COVID-19 cases rise in the region.

The City of Takoma Park Receives GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award
Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) is pleased to announce that the City of Takoma Park, Maryland, has received GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget.

The award represents a significant achievement by the entity. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. To receive the budget award, the entity had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as:

  • a policy document
  • a financial plan
  • an operations guide
  • a communications device

Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.

When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual(s) or department designated as being primarily responsible for having achieved the award. This has been presented to the City’s Finance Department.

There are over 1,700 participants in the Budget Awards Program. The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on GFOA’s website. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

Philadelphia Ave Bus Stop Temporary Closure Begins Monday, November 14

In the process of clearing the site for the Takoma Maryland Library reconstruction project, the bus shelter on Philadelphia Ave/Cedar Ave, westbound, will be temporarily closed for the duration of the construction. The stop services the 17 (RideOn) and F4 (WMATA) routes. The stop will be taken out of circulation on Monday, November 14, and the shelter will be temporarily removed after.

Riders will be directed to the next nearest stops at:

  • Maple Ave and Philadelphia Ave (F4), and
  • Maple Ave and Grant Ave (17)

The bus stop will be re-instituted, and the shelter will be re-installed when construction activities finish. For questions or concerns, please email the Takoma Park Planning Division or call 301-891-7119.

Let It Snow! And Be A Good Neighbor

 

Although we never know this far in advance, forecasts for our area say there is a good chance for some snow this year. With the potential for snow comes an opportunity for residents and business owners to show what good neighbors they can be. When it snows, we need to remove snow and ice from sidewalks so neighbors, children, and customers can travel safely. When sidewalks aren’t clear, people have to walk in the street or try to navigate dangerous patches of ice, so please be considerate of neighbors and the community and keep your sidewalks clear.

Would you be willing to help out your neighbor? If your neighbor needs assistance clearing off their sidewalk, offer to give them a hand after you finish clearing yours.

The City has regulations regarding snow removal. Residents have until noon after a night of snowfall and until 9 PM after a day of snowfall to remove snow and ice from their sidewalks. Businesses must keep their sidewalks clear between 9 AM and 5 PM. The full width of your sidewalk must be clear unless full-width clearing is not feasible, in which case, at a minimum, a continuous three-foot-wide path of the paved sidewalk must be cleared. Lastly, salt is strictly prohibited on sidewalks or within 10 feet of any trees to protect our sidewalks and trees.
