Track Your City Election Ballot and Receive Alerts

The City of Takoma Park is partnering with BallotTrax, a free service that can send you an email, text, or phone call when we have accepted your ballot or if there is a problem with your ballot.  You can also check to see if a ballot was mailed to you.

If you prefer not to sign up, you can simply check the status on the BallotTrax site.

  • Check to see if a ballot was mailed to you.
  • Find out if your ballot has been received and accepted by the City Board of Elections.
  • Receive a notification if there is a problem with your ballot.***

***Important: if you forgot to sign your ballot envelope, or if your ballot cannot be processed for some reason, you will receive a notification so that you can correct the error. In 2020, many ballots could not be counted because voters forgot to sign the ballot envelope or because of a signature mismatch. Don’t let this happen to you!

Takoma Park Police Winter Coat Drive is happening now!

Do you have coats, gloves, or scarves that you don’t need anymore… Please consider donating them!

 

 

The Takoma Park Police Department, in partnership with Adventist Church, the Takoma Park Volunteer Fire Department, and others, is collecting clean, gently-used warm coats of any size from infant to adult. You can make a difference in the lives of others by simply donating any coats or jackets that are no longer needed. We will also accept clean, gently used gloves, mittens, and scarves.

Housing & Community Development (HCD) announces RFP #HCD-2022-10 Redevelopment Opportunity: 7315 New Hampshire Ave

Purpose

The City of Takoma Park is seeking written proposals from qualified respondents for a public-private redevelopment of currently City-owned property located at 7315 New Hampshire Avenue, Takoma Park, MD 20912 (the “Property”). The intent of this Request for Proposals (RFP) is to promote the reuse of the Property in a fashion that will achieve the City’s objectives, including the development of a new recreation facility, expansion of high-quality, stable housing opportunities along the New Hampshire Avenue corridor, and increased tax generation. Request for Proposals documents were made available on October 27, 2022.

Deadline

Proposals are due no later than 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 19, 2023.

2022 Fall Leaf Collection Schedule: Monday, Nov 14, through Friday, Dec 16

2022 Fall Leaf Collection

Fall leaf collection started November 14, 2022, and continues through December 16, 2022.

  • This year’s collection will divide the City into five zones, with one leaf collection vehicle per zone.
  • This arrangement is expected to provide at least collections between November 14, 2022, and December 16, 2022.


State Highway routes will receive a collection on the following scheduled dates:

  • Monday,  December 12
    Streets affected Carroll Ave, Ethan Allen Ave, and Philadelphia Ave
  • Saturday, December 3
    Streets affected Flower Ave (7900 – 8600) and Piney Branch Rd
Leaf Collection Hotline

Public Works has set up a Leaf Collection Hotline at 301-891-7626. Residents may call the Leaf Collection Hotline and leave a voice message to notify Public Works when leaves have been raked out to the curb. Public Works expects to collect the leaves within two weeks.

Important guidelines to be followed for leaf collection
  • Place leaves into a pile close to the edge of the curb.
  • Avoid piling leaves where cars are likely to be parked.
  • Do not rake leaves into the street. Leaf piles create traffic hazards.
  • Do not include branches, brush, vines, rocks, or debris. These items damage equipment and delay collection.
  • Do not pile leaves near storm drain inlets. Leaves can block the drains and cause flooding problems.
  • Do not park your car in front of a leaf pile. Restricting access to leaf piles delays collection.

Jamal T. Fox, MPA, has been inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who’s Who Biographical Registry

 

UPPER MARLBORO, MD, October 13, 2022 — Jamal T. Fox, MPA, has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With several years of excellence to his credit in city administration as a Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Fox has found success as a City Manager for the City of Takoma Park, Maryland. Since 2021, he has focused his efforts on running a complex and multi-faceted organization, leading 13 departments and 250 employees while budgeting millions in a community of over 18,000. Additionally, he is a member of the International City/County Management Association, American Society for Public Administration, the National Forum for Black Public Administrators, the National Recreation and Park Association and the Government Finance Officers Association, among other professional organizations.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Fox began his career as an executive assistant store manager for Walgreens in 2004 until becoming a Management Analyst in the City Manager’s Office for the City of Greensboro, North Carolina in 2010. The same year, he took a role as an Adjunct Professor for North Carolina A&T State University. During his tenure, he began his work in civil service as an Administrative Support for the City of Greensboro from 2011 to 2013. He then became a City Council Member representing District 2 (Northeast Greensboro) in 2013. He was also a teen leadership and social studies teacher for Guilford County Schools in 2016.

Following this time, Mr. Fox served as a Property and Business Development Manager for the City of Portland, Oregon from 2017 to 2019, He subsequently was the Deputy Chief of Staff for the Office of the Mayor there in 2019. During his time in the State of Oregon, Governor Kate Brown appointed Mr. Fox to the Oregon Commission on Black Affairs which he chaired from 2018 to 2020. He moved to the City of Camas, Washington as a City Administrator in 2020.

Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Fox earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from North Carolina Agricultural and Teclmical State University in 2010. He then attained a Master of Public Administration from Capella University in 2012. Well-qualified in his field, he holds numerous professional certifications in his field, including in racial equity, local government management and leadership. In recognition of his excellent work, he has been honored with numerous community awards and speaking awards, as well as a Martin Luther King Jr. Award.

  • Ride-On buses 15, 16, 17, 18, and 25 all go to the Takoma Langley Crossroads Transit Center, as do Metro Buses K6, K9, J4, F8, C2, and C4.
  • RideOn 16 northbound stops on New Hampshire Avenue at Kingwood Drive, close to our new location, as does MetroBus K6. The closest southbound stop is New Hampshire and Merwood.
  • The WMATA trip planner (https://www.wmata.com/) is useful for finding the best way from your location to us.

  • There is ample parking available, including reserved spaces for mobility-challenged patrons.

A New Chapter Begins…

Great news! We are building a new Library. The new Takoma Park Maryland Library, new Computer Center, and improved Community Center facilities are happening at last. After years of conversations and planning, we have dates on the calendar that will impact Library, Computer Center, and Community Center, and our patrons.

Library Closing:

Wednesday, August 24, 2022, was the last day to visit the Library and Computer Center before the facilities relocate to a temporary space for the duration of construction. For more information, please visit: Library and Community Center Renovation

The TKPK Business Investment Grant is now open for applications!

 

Purpose

The TKPK Business Investment Grant (BIG) is available for businesses looking to locate, grow, or expand in the City of Takoma Park. Funds are intended to support capital expenditures and hard costs related to new business fit-out or existing tenant improvements.

Eligible Uses

The BIG Grant can be used for capital expenditures related to a business start-up, expansion, or relocation within the City of Takoma Park.

Funding Source

This grant program is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Battery Recycling Drop-Off Available at Public Works

 

The City of Takoma Park is committed to offering various recycling programs for residents. The newest program now implemented at the Public Works Department is a battery recycling drop-off. Residents can now bring used batteries to be recycled at Public Works. This program is operating in partnership with Call2Recycle, an organization leading the way in battery recycling.

Acceptable Batteries

A list of acceptable batteries that can be recycled includes the following:

AAA, AA, C, D, 9v, Lithium Ion, Small Sealed Lead Acid, Nickel Cadmium, Button cell, Nickel Metal Hydride, and Nickel Zinc

Batteries That Cannot Be Accepted

The following types of batteries cannot be accepted:

Wet cell batteries, car batteries, rechargeable LI-Ion >300 Wh, Lithium primary >25g LI
