Walk to School Day
Walk to School Day is ususally on the first Wednesday in October. Over 5,000 schools from 50 states participate, including five area schools. Walkers from the U.S. join students in 40 countries worldwide.
Students, their families and school staff from Takoma Park Middle, Takoma Park Elementary, Piney Branch Elementary, East Silver Spring Elementary and Rolling Terrace Elementary participate in Walk to School Day in Takoma Park. Safe Routes to School and the Takoma Park Police supports the event to ensure student safety.

Modeled after the successful Walk to School Day, students celebrate Bike to School Day by riding to school with their peers, teachers and guests on the first Wednesday in May. Each year students and parents ride to school together and learn about proper helmet fitting and basic bike safety.
On Bike to School Day and everyday, here are the top 5 tips to stay safe on your bike:
- Always wear a helmet when you ride a bike, scooter or skateboard.
- Do the ABC Spin Check every time you ride.
- Follow the rules of the road.
- Don’t wear ear phones or talk on the phone while riding.
- Be Seen to Be Safe.
