Bike Safety Rodeos

Safe Routes to School  collaborates with area schools to offer bike safety rodeos free of charge to local students. With a combination of classroom learning and hands-on bicycle training, this program teaches best safety practices for biking to school and around town.

Host your own Rodeo! Community leaders must attend a Train the Trainer session before borrowing the fleet of bikes to hold their own Bike Rodeo. Bike Safety Education Train the Trainer sessions will be schedules as needed. Please contact the SRTS Coordinator to learn more.

Cross Safe, Cross Smart

To reinforce safe pedestrian practices, Takoma Park Safe Routes to School developed a Crosswalk Simulation Activity, now called Cross Safe, Cross Smart, for elementary school-aged kids. Cross Safe, Cross Smart includes a mock crosswalk, traffic signs, signals  and other interactive props to engage the students. The workshop, offered in schools and in the community, emphasizes all the basics of pedestrian safety including tips for students to share with parents.

In addition to school workshops, the Cross Safe, Cross Smart kit is loaned to individuals in the community for hands on instruction. Teachers, parents, scout leaders, coaches, for example, can borrow the kit and learn how to use it.  View the video below and contact Kaysi-Ann Webley, Safe Routes Coordinator to schedule a workshop or borrow the Cross Safe, Cross Smart kit.
