About Our Youth Programs

The Recreation Department offers a variety of youth programs for ages 5 – 12 yrs. These programs vary throughout the year with some staple programs such as Morning Addition and Afternoon Addition, Summer Camps, and several sports programs. School Age Child Care Programs

Registration will open Monday, March 16- spaces will fill - don't wait!

After the Bell 

A newly revamped After School program at Takoma Park Recreation Center (7315 New Hampshire Ave). Transportation is not provided to this program through TPRD but is available through MCPS. Enjoy games, crafts and fun time after school. We will also provide homework time.

Morning Addition

This before-school program is designed for those families that need early morning options before the school day starts. Staff will be available to provide informal recreation activities and will escort participants to Takoma Park Elementary School and Piney Branch Elementary School. Children will also have time for homework assignments, breakfast (not provided) or prepare for their day at school. Both Morning and Afternoon Addition are full for the upcoming school year but are accepting waiting list participants.

Afternoon Addition

Emphasis is on providing leisure and recreation programs utilizing our facilities to include but not limited to the computer learning center, dance studio, art room, game room, athletic fields, library and more. We have some exciting activities planned this year including: drama, music, art, sports, study time and playtime that will enlighten, empower and enrich minds and imaginations. Both Morning and Afternoon Addition are full for the upcoming school year but are accepting waiting list participants.

Winter Basketball League

The Winter Basketball League is a non-competitive, developmental, community league. Program goals are to introduce boys and girls to the fundamentals of basketball; emphasize that playing the game and being a member of a team are more important than winning; encourage personal improvement, sportsmanship, and fun; provide comparable playing time for all participants; and meet new kids from the community and surrounding areas.  Practice times vary throughout the week at various local schools. Coaching Information: Volunteer coaches are always needed, training is provided. Team Assignments: Coed divisions will reflect gender equity based on number of participants. Special Requests:  Requests must be made in writing and submitted to the Takoma Park Recreation Department league coordinator. Registration opened Aug 17th, so don’t wait!

Futsal League

Futsal, a sport that is similar to soccer, offers the perfect combination of learning and fun. It is designed to improve fundamental technique and skill development during the winter months. It’s also a great opportunity to meet new friends, stay in shape and prepare for the upcoming season. For the last two years, the program has been filled to capacity with a wait list. Please note that program registration is first come first serve and space is limited to 60 participants. Parents are encouraged to volunteer as coaches. Registration opened Aug 17, so don’t wait!
