Stormwater Facility Inspection and Maintenance

Stormwater management facilities are designed to remove pollutants from stormwater runoff, re-charge groundwater through infiltration and reduce the velocity of the runoff. Throughout the City of Takoma Park, there are (53) public and thirty-five (35) permitted stormwater facilities. Dry wells, Bioretention Systems, Bioswale, Landscape Infiltration, Green Roof, Storage Chamber and Gravel/vegetated swale are few examples of stormwater facilities.

STORMWATER FACILITY INSPECTIONS

The City is responsible for inspecting all public and private stormwater management facilities. Homeowners and private property owners are responsible for the maintenance of their private permitted stormwater facility. The City is required by the State law to ensure that all residential and commercial private facilities are inspected once every three years.

Residential Facilities

Property owners will receive a letter from the City about the inspection. The notification will include an inspection form. The form must be completed by the property manager and/or owner and returned to the Department of Public Works within 30 days of receipt. City staff may also schedule an onsite inspection of key structural components, storage capacity, and maintenance status. The owner will be notified prior to the scheduled site visit. Any defects and required maintenance needs identified during the inspection will be communicated. We generally allow up to 60 days for the repairs to be affected.
