The Benefits of Trees

Our urban trees benefit us in numerous ways. The following are some of the important reasons we work so hard to preserve and promote the urban forest canopy of the City.

Managing Stormwater:

Mature trees help to regulate stormwater.  Trees catch and hold a certain portion of rainfall on leaves, branches, and bark.  They also deepen the soil and create channels for stormwater to soak into the ground.  All of this reduces the total volume of water overflowing our waterways and stormwater infrastructure.

Conserving Energy:

When situated effectively to shade the summer sun on a building and buffer winter winds, trees can lower the need for summer air conditioning by 30% and winter heating expenses by 20% – 50%.

Cooling the City:

Tree canopy across the City helps to shade the sun and reduce ambient temperatures, making it a more desirable, healthy, and safe place to live.

Respiratory Health:

Trees filter airborne pollutants by absorbing them and catching them on leaf and bark surfaces,  benefiting our community’s respiratory health.

Carbon Sequestration:

Trees sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) as they photosynthesize and grow , decreasing the total amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. A mature tree can sequester up to 150kg of CO2 per year.

Screening and Buffering:

Trees absorb and block sound, and can reduce noise pollution up to 40%.  They also can block undesirable sightlines and provide an increased sense of privacy.

Biodiversity:

Trees serve a vital role in boosting urban biodiversity by providing a suitable habitat, food, and protection for a wide range of plants and animals.

Mental Health:

Trees can provide a calming effect to the mind and reduce stress levels.
