Command Staff - Lieutenant Joseph Butler
Lieutenant Joseph Butler is a 23-year veteran of the Takoma Park Police Department. He previously served in the Maryland Army National Guard, Company C 115, Infantry Division for 11 years, holding positions in Infantry and Chemical Quartermaster repairs. During his time with the National Guard, his work ethic and commitment to his duties were noticed, resulting in his promotion to Sergeant.
Lieutenant Butler started as a patrol officer for the Takoma Park Police Department in 1998. He has held several different roles in the Department, including community policing officer, detective, and ultimately Detective Sergeant of the Criminal Investigations Division. Currently, Lt. Butler serves as the Commander in our Criminal Investigations Division.
Twice he was awarded Officer of the Year and most recently received the award for Supervisor of the Year. Additionally, each year, Lieutenant Butler coordinates the holiday toy drive for low-income families.
Lieutenant Butler graduated from Washington Adventist University with his Bachelor’s Degree in Organization Management and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree at Liberty University.
