Takoma Park Sustainability Manager, Gina Mathias, will be available from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm to review contractor recommendations and answer questions. Resource lists will be available for questions about contractors, rebates, appliances, and more. Gina can also help with your Green Home Certification applications and rebate applications. The Neighborhood Energy Challenge ends in March and rebate money is quickly being claimed, so now is the time to plan what energy efficiency improvements you will make! City Responds to Recommended Decision to Allow Move of Washington Adventist Hospital

On December 2, 2015, the City of Takoma Park and two area hospitals filed their “exceptions” to the Maryland Health Care Commissioner Frances P. Phillips’s recommendation (with conditions) that Washington Adventist Hospital be allowed to move most of its operations out of Takoma Park.

Information on the Commissioner’s Recommended Decision can be found here.

The Takoma Park Exceptions Submission from the City of Takoma Park expresses its appreciation of the first recommended condition, which is to have the hospital open an urgent care center on the Takoma Park campus coinciding with the closure of the acute care hospital, and requiring that the center must be open every day of the year, 24 hours a day. The City’s submission expresses concern about the loss of emergency services at the Takoma Park campus, and urges consideration of a Freestanding Medical Facility (stand-alone emergency department) as a way to ensure that needed health services remain in Takoma Park.

Holy Cross Hospital and MedStar Montgomery General Hospital each also filed exceptions to the Commissioner’s Recommended Decision. The document filed by Holy Cross Hospital also encourages approving a Freestanding Medical Facility for the Takoma Park campus. Links to the filed exceptions documents:

Responses to the exceptions submissions are due by 4:30 PM on December 10. An Exceptions Hearing before the Maryland Health Care Commission will take place at 1 pm on December 17. The City of Takoma Park will ask to speak at the Exceptions Hearing. After the hearing, the full Maryland Health Care Commission is expected to take final action on the Certificate of Need request by Washington Adventist Hospital.

Municipal Government Works Month

Since 1993, Maryland’s cities and towns have celebrated Municipal Government Works Month each November to promote residents’ awareness of and interest in local government. To help promote municipal government awareness, the Mayor issued a Proclamation on November 9, 2015 proclaiming November as Municipal Government Works Month.

The City of Takoma Park helps to make Maryland a great place to live, work, and play. Here is a snapshot of the work that municipal government does to enhance the quality of life.

Vacuum Leaf Collection.  The Public Works Department picks up leaves each fall. This years collection begins November 16 and continues through December 18. Not only does this service help clean up our yards, sidewalks, and streets, it helps our gardens grow by making shredded leaf mulch available in the spring.

Kilowatt Smackdown. With the support of the City of Takoma Park, the Green Impact Campaign (GIC) and Nextility, two DC-based energy organizations, are coordinating a community initiative to help Takoma Park small businesses save money on energy while reducing their environmental impact.

Snow Angels Program. The program developed from a partnership between student volunteers of the Takoma Park Middle School Difference Makers and the City of Takoma Park’s Lifelong Takoma Program. The Snow Angels provide assistance to those who most need help with snow removal in the winter. Recruitment for volunteers and those who need assistance with snow removal is going on now.

Police Services and Programs. Whether online, in person or by phone, the Police Department is here to serve the people of Takoma Park.  The department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency service via the front parking lot of the Takoma Park Community Center Center.

Food Waste Collection. Currently, the City is collecting from approximately 1,500 households with an average of 13 pounds per household per week. This curbside collection program is available to all single family homes and multi-family properties with twelve (12) units or less. Interested households can register through the City’s Food Waste Page or by calling 301-891-7633.
