Join us as we celebrate the important role the arts and humanities play in Takoma Park with free demonstrations, workshops and performances that honor the efforts of the artists, historians, musicians, and cultural groups that enrich our daily lives.
Befitting its reputation as both a model of recycling and an artistic enclave in the DC area, Takoma Park is proud to launch a new art movement - the School of Trash-Can Art. This art contest is sponsored by the Takoma Park Arts and Humanities Commission and the City of Takoma Park’s Public Works Department. Anyone and everyone is eligible to submit an original 2 or 3 dimensional work of “trashy art” made of 100 percent trash or recyclable materials.
A draft New Hampshire Avenue Concept Plan, developed from the New Hampshire Charrette public outreach, is now available on the web. It is scheduled for adoption by the City Council on October 27. This plan covers the area from Sligo Creek Parkway to Eastern Avenue. Read the Concept Plan here.
NEW! Schedule Heavy Collections or Request Mulch Delivery By Email

You can now request heavy collection appointments and mulch delivery by email. Send your request to TiffanyS@takomagov.org. Please include your name, address and needed service. If you are scheduling a heavy collection, please include a list of the items for disposal. You will receive an email confirmation of your appointment date. Payment by check or money order must be mailed or delivered to the Public Works Department, 31 Oswego Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910 prior to your scheduled appointment date. Cash payment can be made at the Finance office window at 7500 Maple Avenue.

EYA, the firm that wishes to build a townhouse development at the Takoma Metro station property, has proposed modifications to the concept plan previously submitted to WMATA. A presentation of the revised plans is scheduled to be made to the Takoma Park City Council on the evening of October 6, 2008. The new plans are being reviewed by City of Takoma Park staff. The revised plans consist of one with site details and one in color. EYA anticipates it will submit formal detailed plans to the DC Office of Planning in March, 2009. For more information...

The City’s program has been expanded to include any non-bottle plastic container that is plastic type #2 through #5; margarine tubs, yogurt cups, plastic squeeze bottles, peanut butter jars, ice cream and kitty litter type bucket can now be recycled.
Bring your old or unwanted electronic equipment to be refurbished or recycled to the Public Works Yard at 31 Oswego Avenue, Monday - Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

Crossroads Farmers Market Music and Rides

Crossroads Farmers Market is open each Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. (rain or shine!) on Holton Lane across from the Langley Post Office. Each week, the Market hosts international musicians. As of August 4th, the City is offering free bus service on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month with stops at the Community Center, Victory Towers, Franklin Apartments and Park Ritchie Apartments between 3:30 and 6 p.m. For more information on the bus service, please call 301-891-7119; For more information about the market, please email crossroadsmarket@gmail.com or call 301-445-4368.
The Jackson Boyd playground, located at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and Boyd Avenue, is undergoing a renovation. The City coordinated several community meetings to provide input to the playground design firm hired by the City. The design was finalized and the construction phase began in mid-July. Funds for the design phase and the construction phase were provided by Program Open Space (3/4) and the City (1/4). The design phase cost $18,250, the construction phase is estimated to cost $142,000. The project is expected to be completed by the Fall of 2008. The contractor is Triple J Construction.
