POSTPONED: Spring Outdoor Movie – Saturday, April 6

 

Due to the cold temperatures this weekend the outdoor movie has been postponed until June 8. We hope to see you then!

  • Blanket or lawn chairs
  • Blanket for stay warm
  • Flashlight for aid when the movie is over
  • Extra snacks for you and your family

Important Info

  •  If there is inclement weather we will move indoors to the Community Center and post on social media and here.
  • The Recreation Department will hand out popcorn and cups of water (feel free to bring your own snacks as well).
  • Voting will be open prior to the event date, check this page or our social media pages afterwards for the results.
  • Reminder – there is very limited parking at the Community Center due to construction, please allow additional time to get to the Outdoor Movie location.

Good Sportsmanship Month – Meet the Author Event

In celebration of Good Sportsmanship Month, and in a partnership with Takoma Park MD Library, the Recreation Department is having a Meet the Author event at the Takoma Park Community Center this Sunday, March 26 at 3pm. Everyone is invited to meet Author, former Collegiate Athlete and Recreation Professional Al “Hondo” Handy. He will discuss his journey from being part of integrating Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin, MD, to his experiences with collegiate sports and in the recreation profession. There will be an interview with Mr. Handy followed by a book signing and copies of “Defying Expectations” for sale.

 

The event is this Sunday, March 26 starting at 3pm in the auditorium.

Summer Camp Registration is Here!

 

The Takoma Park Recreation Department offers extraordinary camp experiences at an exceptional value! We are always excited to bring you a fun filled summer, packed with lots of memories. Each week will have a theme and activities will include crafts, indoor and outdoor activities and much, much more.

Registration Dates:

  • Feb. 15 for current scholarship participants
  • Feb. 22 for Takoma Park residents
  • March 1 for non-resident registration
  • All registration opens at 9am on the mornings noted above.
  • You can register for camps online through ActiveNet.

Camp Takoma will start on June 26th. You can choose from just 1 week up through the entire summer. Morning care and after care will be available unless noted in the Summer Camp Guide.

As in previous years, you may choose to pay in full at the time of registration or select the payment plan option. This payment plan option, which must be chosen at the time of registration, divides the total amount due into two equal payments: 50% of the total fees will be due at the time of registration, with the remaining payments due on June 1.

The City of Takoma Park has partnered with the Montgomery County Office of Broadband Programs to provide FREE Chromebooks for Takoma Park residents in need. The County has been providing Chromebooks to county residents over the past four months through a federal grant via the county library system. To date, they have given away over 30,000 laptops.

We are excited to offer 4 special registration links just for City residents for this Saturday, October 8, 2022, (10/08/22). There will be two additional dates this fall, with registration information forthcoming.

Requirements to Apply:

  • Must be a Montgomery County resident, age seven (7) years or older

  • One computer per person

  • Must have a County or Takoma Park Library card number.

  • Must sign a certification that the computer recipient would not have a computer for education purposes if the County did not provide one (education means any type of learning, including how to use technology)

  • The County owns the computer, and recipients may not sell it

  • Every person, including children, must have an appointment and appear in person with photo ID to receive the computer

Recreation Department Registration for Summer and School Year Programs Continue

Don’t miss out on some of the Recreation Department’s most popular programs!

Summer Camp

Registration opened in March for summer camp and some sessions are already full.  Most sessions are one week in length. Take advantage of our safe, structured place for your child while school is on break.  Before Care and After Care are available for an additional fee for youth camps. There is a 50% deposit due at the time of registration, with the remaining balance due by June 1.

2022-2023 School Year Child Care

Another popular program is our Before Care and After Care for the school year. Program emphasis is on providing leisure and recreation programs utilizing our facilities while having lots of fun! There is a 20% deposit due at the time of registration. The remaining balance will be divided into monthly payments beginning October 1st.

Paperwork

No matter which of these two programs you choose, participants are required to complete a Participant Profile Form prior to the start of camp.

If it is necessary for a participant to take over-the-counter or prescribed mediation during program hours, their Authorization for Medication Form must be completed in full by the physician and signed by the parent or guardian.

Scholarship opportunities are available for Takoma Park residents who qualify.

“Summer Extra” is here for summer school students

Summer Extra is a NEW program to offset your child’s MCPS Summer School Day (PBES and TPES only). This four-week program is a general recreation before and after school program providing games, activities, sports, and crafts. Activities will be both indoor and outdoors.

Ages:   Grades K-5 at PBES and TPES

Dates:  July 6 – July 30

Times:  7 -9 am and 2 – 6 pm

Cost:  $400 for City Residents/$500 Non-Residents

Recreation Department Childcare Programs Are Open!

 

The before care and aftercare programs through the Recreation Department are now open for registration. There is limited space available due to COVID restrictions. New this year is Before the Bell (a morning care program) at the Recreation Center (7315 New Hampshire Ave)! Part time and full time recreation department staff have just been through two full days of COVID safety training to prepare. Scholarships are still available for Takoma Park residents and those that have recently lost their job due to COVID may have the program fees waived.

Participants will be divided into pods from TPES and PBES.  If you are a virtual learning and need some socialization and fun, consider registering as well.
